Much has been made over the past month regarding Americans supposed sudden love affair with soccer, as the U.S. team escaped the “Group of Death” before losing to Belgium in the knockout stage. Ratings for Games Bola Sepak Fifa 2014ESPN have been off the charts with 25 million people watching the U.S. and Portugal battle to a draw during the group stage. Huge viewing parties took place in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and just about every other major city for the U.S. games. Gatherings will be widespread for the World Cup final Sunday between Germany and Argentina.

The U.S. is not about to be a soccer-crazed country like the rest of the world, but Brazil is not a one-year blip for soccer in America. The reality is that soccer’s place in the U.S. sports landscape has been steadily gathering momentum for two decades since the World Cup took place on U.S. soil in 1994. MLS launched as a 10-team league in 1996 and boasts 19 teams this season, including heavyweights like the Seattle Sounders who draw more than 40,000 fans per game. Comcast unit NBCUniversal signed a three-year, $250 million deal in 2012 to show every English Premier League game on American TV. Ratings doubled this season compared to the prior year and greatly increased the exposure of the U.S. audience to top level soccer. EPL clubs Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United have ramped up their summer tours in the U.S. in recent years.

But one overlooked factor that has spurred interest in soccer among Americans is the incredible popularity of Electronic Arts’ FIFA video game, which is the best-selling sports video game in the world and has sold more than 100 million copies since it launched in 1993. Credit Suisse forecasts unit sales of 11.3 million worldwide of FIFA 15 for the 12 months ending in March 2015. Sales of FIFA 16 are expected to hit 12.1 million. The game is the biggest annual release for $3.6 billion-in-sales Electronic Arts.

Youth soccer has been popular in the U.S. for decades, but FIFA exposes kids to the international game. Total unit sales of the series in the U.S. topped five million over the past two years, according to market research firm NPD. It still trails Madden NFL and NBA 2K among sports games in North America, but it is closing the gap quickly. Unit sales jumped 35% between 2010 and 2012 in the U.S. when they reached 2.6 million.

Most kids have been exposed to professional football or basketball on TV before they ever play one of those sports' video games. But FIFA creates soccer fans of the pro game. Gamers play FIFA and they begin to recognize the stars and identify the teams. They then seek out these players and clubs on TV or videos on the Internet. After watching a game, FIFA owners and their friends will go back to their Xbox to simulate what they just watched. EA ran a simulation of the 2014 World Cup before the event started and crowned Germany as the champion.

My teenage nephews and their friends are avid players of the game, building teams and trading players along the way. FIFA has made them fans of the real action on the pitch. They are able to rattle off the names of most players on nearly every team among the 32 teams that qualified for the World Cup. “FIFA is a way for people to learn about the sport on the international stage,” says NPD gaming analyst Liam Callahan.

A 2012 ESPN Sports Poll found that soccer was the second most popular sport for those ages 12-24. FIFA video games were cited as a driving factor for the sport’s popularity among the younger generation in the study. The age group overlaps nicely with FIFA’s core audience which is 16-32, according to Nick Channon, a senior producer of the game at EA. These are the people that are fueling the interest in the sport and the nucleus of World Cup viewing parties. A recent survey of Americans by the Pew Research Center found that 24% of those 18-29 had a strong interest in the World Cup. It drops down to 16-17% for those 30-64 and only 9% for the 65+ crowd.

FIFA was not always a monster hit. It trailed Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer in the marketplace through much of the early 2000s before a total redesign of the game for the 2008 version. The game is now rated as the top sports game almost every year with a Metacritic rating that regularly tops 87 (it was 73 for FIFA 07). Recent versions of FIFA get updated once or twice a week to account for player moves. “The updates make the game incredible current, so what you seen on TV is what you see in the video game,” says Channon.

Electronic Arts launched FIFA in 1993 and the 22nd annual version of the game, FIFA 15, will be released in September (check out a preview here). “FIFA 15 will bring emotion into the game,” says Channon. The game will feature more than 600 emotional reactions by players as they respond to big moments how they would in real life. Channon says FIFA 15 will have improvements on ball physics, and the imprint of every footstep a player makes will appear on the pitch. The game is getting closer and closer to what you see on your TV or at the stadium for a match. The better the game gets, the more fans it attracts to the sport.
